Indigestion and Oranges March 16, 2010

Apparently I am culturally inept since I am unable to post any pictures currently…

It could be me, it could be technical difficulties, but it bothers the hell out of me either way.  Hopefully, soon I will be able to figure out how to get back to posting pictures, and actually try and do something more creative with them… perhaps try more creative everything with this blog?

What I eventually want to talk about are two interesting restaurant experiences.  The first being a personal introduction to a still mystifying cuisine “Temple Food” and the other being a rare opportunity to sit in a restaurant on the 54th floor of the Park Hyatt Tokyo where apparently the movie “Lost in Translation” was filmed.  Neither of which I am going to tell the story of, until I can get something visual for you.

What I wanted to mention now was eating an ORANGE before going to bed at night.  I highlighted ORANGE because that is where my picture would have been.  A while ago, my doctor recommended I try eating an orange before going to bed to aid against my indigestion/acid reflux problem.  I think that my heart for this gentleman was buying into it but, my subconscious head is thinking “whatever”…

What happens is that my beloved girlfriend, who secretly cares for me, starts to buy oranges as often as she possibly can.  Of course she strongly reminds me of this before I get into bed most every night.  I start to oblige quickly, because I am not a stupid boyfriend, and I start to become addicted.  I have been eating a cold orange before I go to bed (I can prep and peel those suckers so fast now) for about a month now and at least know this;  I haven’t had to pop 3 Tums or Rolaids right before or during my sleep, and  apart from being refreshing and tasty, it is a step towards me eating healthy… which I never thought I would actually start doing.

Strange how my doctor knew…

interesting – I would never had known to try an orange.

He couldn’t offer an explanation as to what bilogically is happening with the orange vs indigestion, but try it and see and please let me know how it goes after a few weeks. I believe health is a very individualized thing, what worked for me may not work for others. I figured that all the citric acid would be bad…

A couple of years ago I was told to add a tablespoon of vinegar to a half cup of warm water every evening to reduce acid indegestion. I did it for quite awhile and it worked. For some reason, I stopped and the acid indegestion returned. Somehow I feel that the oranges and vinegar work for the same reason, and this is the only attempt at an explanation that I can find: “Vinegar is often prescribed as the most effective natural remedy for heartburn. Taking a little apple cider vinegar diluted in water during a meal often totally eliminates heartburn. The additional acid has a way of signaling to the stomach to cease acid production.” I would rather eat the orange.

I didn’t have an orange, but I ate a whole grapefruit. It about killed me, stayed up half the night.

Stay away from the grapefruit. It’s not citrus that helps, it has something to do with the orange itself. No clementines, tangerines, grapefruit, etc… just a plain orange. Sorry to hear that, I actually can sympathize because I have been through the sleepless night quite a lot. The quick neutralizer to that is not tums or rolaids but a healthy spoonfull of baking soda in luke warm water.
